April 18th, 2022 – Monday Afternoon
“Abraham called the name of that place The LORD Will Provide, as it is said to this day, ‘In the mount of the LORD it will be provided.'” ~Genesis 22:14
“He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him over for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us all things?” ~Romans 8:32
“Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord; seeing that His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence.” ~2 Peter 1:2-3
Jehovah Jireh: The LORD Will Provide. Abraham’s faith in the LORD was fully justified; he expected God to provide and he trusted Him to fulfill His promises, and, the LORD proved Himself above and beyond whatever Abraham could have even begun to think. Instead of having to sacrifice his own son (and see God bring him back to life – see Hebrews 11:17-19), Abraham witnessed the LORD’s intervention and subsequent provision. The result is our main passage above: Abraham gave the name of “Jehovah Jireh” to the place [where he offered the ram as a burnt offering] as a testament to the LORD’s “seeing to” the sacrifice. (The word “provide” has the idea of seeing to or looking out for.)
The LORD Will Provide. Notice, Abraham wasn’t begging God to spare his son; rather, he was obedient to the LORD’s command, while trusting Him that He was just, good, and faithful to do what He had said He would do. The LORD had already promised to make Abraham into a great nation through Isaac; Abraham knew that God wasn’t going back on His word. That’s why he was so confident in his obedience and in his explanation to Isaac’s question in verse 7. The LORD’s provision of a ram was in-line with His OWN nature, character, and word; He ALWAYS provides whatever is necessary for His good and perfect will to be accomplished in the lives of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose.
The other two passages serve to reinforce the reality of The LORD Will Provide. Scripture is riddled with examples of God’s powerful working in and through the lives of those who trusted Him and those who proved His faithfulness again and again. He doesn’t change and His faithfulness doesn’t diminish over time; He ALWAYS provides what is necessary, when it is necessary, in accordance with His infinite knowledge, righteousness, and mercy. [I testify today that He has done this again and again in my own life, from spiritual provisions of abundant and rich grace to physical provisions of finances, strength, and healing. A major example of this happened last week – though it was only “major” because my finite perspective wasn’t completely focused on The LORD Will Provide in the time leading up to it. 🙂 He is so gracious!]
My beloved brethren, what better time than now, in remembering the greatest sacrifice and provision the world has and ever will see – the cross and resurrection of Jesus Christ – what better time than now to refocus our attention on the REALITY that God is Jehovah Jireh? Let us who have been bought with the precious blood of Christ and raised in the newness of life by the Spirit of God give praise – in humility and obedience – to our faithful God. He has provided everything that we need for life and godliness; He has and will provide every ounce of grace, mercy, and peace that we need to live moment by moment for His glory; and, our lives will overflow with pure adoration as we trust Him and see His faithful provision again and again.
