“Abraham said to his servant, the oldest of his household, who had charge of all that he owned, ‘Please place your hand under my thigh, and I will make you swear by the LORD, the God of heaven and the God of earth, that you shall not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I live…'” ~Genesis 24:2-3
Just in case you need a reminder of the preeminence and authority of the LORD, Abraham provides another reinforcement of the LORD’s position and power in this passage. Let there be no mistake; He is “the LORD, the God of heaven and the God of earth.” In causing his most valuable servant to swear by the LORD, Abraham was holding his man to the charge of the highest possible Oath-Keeper and Judge. This Witness was not a far-off deity or a precious monument or some other person or thing to make an oath by; no, this is THE God of heaven and THE God of earth!
My friends, we have such a puny and self-centered perspective! The LORD is God! He is God and God alone! There is no God but Jehovah! There is no other Sovereign, no other Potentate, no other God besides Him! Abraham wasn’t just listing the LORD as the God of heaven and the God of earth because he didn’t know of any other God; no, he called his servant to make an oath under the LORD’s authority because there IS NO OTHER GOD BUT THE LORD. He alone rules the heavens, the earth, and the dwelling place of God; He alone is King over all.
Psalm 103:17 states this: “The LORD has established His throne in the heavens, and His sovereignty rules over all.” Everything – and that includes EVERYTHING – is under His perfect order and kingdom authority. [That doesn’t mean that He hasn’t given freedoms and abilities that are often misused, abused, and twisted in an attempt to defy Him and rebel against Him; rather, even in the freedoms and powers He allows to exist, He is still sovereignly in control – able to bring about perfect judgment, justice, and good.] The LORD is the God of heaven (the word is frequently used of His abode/throne and the vast skies) and the God of earth; He is THE BOSS.
You think about the reality of this truth in light of your own life… What are you trying to control? What are you trying to change? What are you struggling with and attempting to reconcile in your mind? What practical needs do you have? Who are you bitter towards? Who is holding something against you? Who or what do you fear? What secret (or not so secret) sins are you hanging onto?
We could continue on and on, I’m sure, but it ultimately boils down to trust. Who or what you are trusting in can be traced back to only one of two options: Yourself (including those you deem trustworthy) or the LORD, the God of heaven and the God of earth (who is the only One who is trustworthy). Trusting ourselves may seem like the right (and easy) choice at first, but it always leads to heartache, ruin, and death. Trusting the LORD, on the other hand, is a walk of faith (and it is often difficult and uncertain), but it always leads to joy, peace, and life.
What would the LORD say about your trust and my trust? Let us remember Who He is and let us place our trust in Him alone.
