New Creatures In Christ

October 5th, 2022 – Wednesday Afternoon

“Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.” ~2 Corinthians 5:17

Have you been changed?

In the preceding verses in this passage, we have seen and reviewed the depths of the love of Christ, the compelling power of His death and resurrection, and how the reality of these truths has given a different perspective to those who have found their identity in Jesus through faith. Now, here in verse 17, the full weight of what all of this means for the believer comes to a clear light: Those who have come to Christ and have been identified with Him have become new creatures.

To be certain, Paul and Timothy are not communicating to the Corinthians that they have been changed from human beings into some other created beings; such a ridiculous idea would deconstruct the whole story of redemption. No, it is not that humans have become some other form of life, but that broken, sinful, and empty creatures have become whole, holy, and overflowing vessels of the Spirit of God. Instead of destruction, impurity, godlessness, and greed, there is beauty, purity, reverence, and contentment; rather than self-centeredness, pride, debauchery, and anxiety, there is love, humility, godliness, and peace.

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.” Have you and are you becoming new? Are the old things – the old ways of sin, the old ways of thinking, the old ways of looking at other people, the old ways of comprehending God, the old ways of death, the old things of this life – are the old things dead and gone in you? Have the new things – the newness of life in Christ, the peace that passes understanding, the abundant grace of God, the love for others, the joy of the Lord – have the new things come to life in your heart and mind and body? Have you been changed?

My beloved friends, what a privilege we have in Christ Jesus – not only to know the one true Father and Son – but to live life with a completely different (and wonderful) mindset! If you have been born again of the Spirit of God, are you choosing today to live in His newness – in your thoughts, words, and actions? If you have not been born again through faith in Christ, TODAY is the day of salvation; Jesus died and rose so that you can live, so that you can be free from sin, and so that you can know the Living God. Don’t delay – either to obey as a believer or to believe as a sinner – Jesus is coming again!
